A time travel adventure
Evoland 2 is a role-playing game that focuses on time-traveling and exploring different eras. It is a unique game wherein the art style and even the gameplay itself also evolve as the protagonist progresses through the main storyline to change history, considered a smart and innovative idea implemented by the developers.
While adventure is the main aspect of Evoland 2, it also blends in top-down RPG and platformer elements — depending on the time era you’re playing in; a great all-around game for those looking for one. It is also available on various platforms, making it accessible to a wider audience.
An evolving journey
Evoland 2 is truly an evolving game itself — quite literally — since the theme of the game transitions from a simple 8-bit adventure to a charming 3D journey, depending on the era the player is currently visiting. Time-traveling is the core gameplay element of this title, with the protagonist going through different periods of time to try and alter the course of history.
The main plot of the game is similar to what most role-playing games are, such as saving the world from those who wish to destroy it. The player takes control of Kuro, an amnesiac young man who is later found by a girl named Fina, and the pair travel together with the goal of preventing the world from total annihilation.
Despite being a typical RPG game, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, as a lot of humor is involved in it. It’s also pretty versatile in the sense that it shifts through different genres such as top-down adventure, side-scrolling, turn-based combat, and even space-shooter elements. This presents a bit of a challenge, however, as it requires players to adapt quickly once the mechanics transition to a different one.
All-in-one gameplay experience
Evoland 2 is unique for it lets players experience different types of video game genres in one adventure. It definitely is a rollercoaster ride due to the variety of mechanics that the game delivers to the table. However, this all-genre-in-one-game may not appeal to everyone. Other drawbacks to the game are the occasional technical glitches and the uneven pacing of its historical game references.
